Summer otitis? The correct name is otitis externa.

The vulgarity of the name is born associated with the inflammation that is observed in the external ear canal, due to the increase in temperature and humidity that occurs there. This situation is related to summer and holidays: swimming pools, sea, and diving. It can occur at any age, but it is more common in children between 7 and 12 years old. The increased presence in wet areas inhibits the accumulation of natural wax in the ear canal, a substance that works as a protection. In the presence of this type of otitis, it is common to observe secretion from the ear with the appearance of pus, pain, sensitivity, itching, and, in more complicated situations, fever and hearing loss. There are some simple steps that can inhibit its appearance: tilting your head to either side after bathing or diving, wiping your ear with the tip of a towel, and naturally controlling the time spent in the water. If the pain is persistent and you notice pus coming out of the ear, it is recommended that you see a doctor.
